October 15-19

Celebrating Hispanic American Heritage!

We read The Crying Mountian, a Mexican legend retold by Patricia Almada. Then, the students played with GoogleEarth. They looked at Mexico and all the volcanoes! Even Popo and Ixta!

We also explored other Hispanic countries. Then, we learned that many US states have a Hispanic influence. Can you guess these states?

October 8-12

1st Grade: Using starfall.com and books, we read fiction and non fiction pumpkin stories. Everyone drew pumpkin patches using KIDPIX.

2nd Grade: Read outloud Stellaluna, by Janell Cannon. Then, everyone diagrammed a bat using Excel. We compared bat parts to human body parts. Bats are the only mammal that can fly! For more bat information checkout http://intergate.cccoe.k12.ca.us/bats/ .

3rd Grade: Discussed the history of the compass rose. Originally, the compasss points were not N,S,E,W. The compass points were named from the winds.
The students read and followed directions in order to draw a symmetrical compass rose using KIDPIX. More compass rose information at http://pages.prodigy.net/pizzabagel/CompassRoses_Links.htm


4th Grade: Read the interactive Living in Space website with partners. We learned how to design a space station.

5th Grade: Continued researching explorers and recording findings using the readwritethink.org online timeline. We practiced using multiple texts and recording the main ideas.

5th Grade bilingual
: Continued researching the CAUSE and EFFECTS of volcanoes. Information is gathered using books, encyclopedias and Internet. Using Kidspiration, a mind map is created. Then, notes are turned into a paragraph writing piece.

October 1-5

Kindergarten: Introduce www.starfall.com website. Students will explore ABC's Let's Get Ready to Read and the Calendar story.

1st and 2nd Grades: Discussed who Christopher Columbus was and why we honor him on Columbus Day. "He never gave up in what he believed even though others disagreed". We played the Rhyming Christopher Columbus powerpoint poem. Read about Columbus . Then, we colored online Columbus pictures.

3rd Grade: Practiced reading maps using online Mapping Information and Activities.

4th and 5th Grades: Research Christopher Columbus using a reader's theatre play, encyclopedias, books and Internet. Record findings using an online timeline.

5th grade performed the play to some 1st and 2nd grade classes!
